Orbis.
Do you struggle with getting your children to complete the necessary hygiene activities?
Orbis helps leverage the toothbrushing habit for children and enhances their overall bathroom experience.
This project was created in the Summer of 2019 during my Co-Op at Procter Gamble. I found a unique opportunity to help promote the toothbrushing habit for the Oral Care team.
Timeline
10 weeks
Our Problem
Parents that struggle with getting their children to complete the necessary hygiene activities such as brushing their teeth, using deodorant, or taking a shower/bath.
Our Users
Tech savvy parents with children between the ages of 5-10.
Our Solution
Design an interactive platform that rewards and motivates children to maintain healthy hygiene, while promoting healthy habit stacking for children.
A Two Sided Ecosystem.
Through a mobile application, parents will be able to set goals, effortlessly track their children’s routine, and seamlessly reward them. Children will have a hub placed in their bathroom where they can see their progress, receive reminders, and get step by step guidance.
Fun for all.
Orbis is an interactive app that allows children to compete against their siblings or even their parents to earn points and receive rewards that they value. This will help create healthy routines for both children and parents.
My Process
To begin my research, I created a survey that targeted parents with children ages 5-10, who struggle getting them to complete the necessary hygiene activities.
I received 60 responses.
What do you do to help encourage your children to do these activities?
“We have a routine. If it were not for that it would be impossible. Our five year old runs from us. But when he knows the routine he is more cooperative.”
Anonyomous Parent
Do you use any type of reward system when your children successfully finishes any of these tasks?
“Yes it is part of the routine. Take your bath, watch your favorite show and have you bedtime snack. Brush your teeth get ready for bed.”
Anonyomous Parent
From the insights gathered, it is evident that parents are having a difficult time getting their children to complete everyday hygiene tasks. However, when parents do implement routines they notice that their children become more cooperative. From this information, I created a persona that resembled a family of four. Both of their children struggle with completing different hygiene activities.
Once finalizing my research and personas, I developed a concept that enhances children’s overall bathroom experience. To bring my ideas to life, I began wireframing and sketching my thoughts on paper. I then brought my concepts to the computer and began designing.
How will it work?
Parents will place RFID tags on items such as a toothbrush, shower faucet, or on whatever else they are struggling to get their children to complete. The tags track when and for how long the children are doing these activities and transmit data back to the application.
Friction Free Setup - Effortless Tracking - Seamless Rewarding
My main goal when designing this application was to make sure that it was simple and noninvasive for parents to use. Parents will be able to quickly get through the onboarding process, effortlessly track their children’s hygiene routines, and seamlessly reward them.
Friction Free Setup
With current apps, parents struggle to get through the setup portion because it is often too complex and just takes up too much time. By using templated routines that can be customized, parents will be able to quickly get through the process and get right to using it.
Effortless Tracking
Parents will be able to use their phones to quickly track their children’s progress and see who is winning as well as how close they are to achieving their personal goal.
Seamless Rewarding
Parents will be able to quickly reward their children with electronic gift cards to their favorite places.
Children’s Interactive Hub.
This hub will be placed in the children’s bathroom for them to see their progress, get reminders, and receive guidance during different activities. Children will be able to pick characters to help them walk through each task. In addition, they will be able to watch their favorite videos during activities to help make time pass.
After implementing Orbis in the Jones routine, they noticed a drastic change in their children’s behavior and willingness to cooperate.
Impact
Enhancing children’s overall bathroom experience by making it more interactive all while still teaching them the importance of creating healthy habit stacking routines.
